Consensus-Based Management of Distributed and Replicated Data
نویسنده
چکیده
Atomic Broadcast and Atomic Commitment are fundamental problems that have to be solved when managing distributed/replicated data. This short note aims at showing that solutions to these problems can benefit from results associated with the Consensus problem. Such an approach helps gain a better insight into distributed/replicated data management problems. More precisely, this note addresses one of the most important issues one is faced to when designing distributed/replicated data management protocols, namely, their Non-Blocking property. This property stipulates that the crash of nodes participating in a protocol must not prevent the non-crashed nodes from terminating the protocol execution. Results from the Consensus study allow to know the minimal assumptions a system must satisfy in order its distributed/replicated data management protocols be non-blocking despite process crash and asynchrony.

Entropy-based Consensus for Distributed Data Clustering
The increasingly larger scale of available data and the more restrictive concerns on their privacy are some of the challenging aspects of data mining today. In this paper, Entropy-based Consensus on Cluster Centers (EC3) is introduced for clustering in distributed systems with a consideration for confidentiality of data; i.e. it is the negotiations among local cluster centers that are used in t...
متن کاملAn Efficient Optimal Algorithm for Minimizing the Overall Communication Cost in Replicated Data Management
Quorum consensus methods have been widely applied to managing replicated data. In this paper, we study the problem of vote and quorum assignments for minimizing the overall communication cost of processing the typical demands of transactions. This problem is left open, even restricted to a uniform network, and we shall show that it can be solved by an efficient polynomial time algorithm. 1 I n ...
متن کاملAdaptive Distributed Consensus Control for a Class of Heterogeneous and Uncertain Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems
This paper has been devoted to the design of a distributed consensus control for a class of uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems in the strict-feedback form. The communication between the agents has been described by a directed graph. Radial-basis function neural networks have been used for the approximation of the uncertain and heterogeneous dynamics of the followers as well as the effect o...
متن کاملOn Delay Optimization in Quorum Consensus
The management of replicated data in distributed database systems is a classic problem with great practical importance. Quorum consensus is one of the popular methods, combining with eager replication, for managing replicated data. In this paper, we will investigate the problems of delay-optimal quorum consensus. Firstly, we will show that the problem of minimizing the total-delay (or mean-dela...
متن کاملDelay - Optimal Quorum Consensus
Given a set of nodes S, a coterie is a set of pairwise intersecting subsets of S. Each element in a coterie is called a quorum. Mutual exclusion in a distributed system can be achieved if each request is required to get consensus from a quorum of nodes. This technique of quorum consensus is also used for replicated distributed database systems, and bicoteries and wr-coteries have been deened to...
